Ecology

Embedded in the DNA of Indrani Lodge is a deep commitment to ecology: our leitmotif is and has always been to restore and regenerate, whether it be the nature that surrounds us, the guests who visit us or ties to the community around us. As our project grows, we continue to find ways in which to place the environment front and centre. More than just labelling ourselves as “green” or “eco-luxe” or “responsible” or “sustainable” we have taken concrete steps to ensure that our impact on the environment is minimal and our carbon imprint neutral.

we use Biomass and geothermal heating to generate our own heat
in cooperation with Coopeos: installation of biomass plant on the Indrani property
subterranean heating network powered by local organic wood waste
network serves Indrani AND 39 neighbours and heats homes, domestic water and our indoor pool
we are a co-founder of the GreenDyle Cooperative, which produces the heat, optimises its distribution and maintains the network
this energy is clean and durable
we save 260 tons of carbon a year - the equivalent of the C02 emitted by driving 1 million kilometres
this project involves and includes our community
we have requested an authorization to extend our installation to produce electricity. This communal energy project is one of the first of its kind in Europe.

The Morimont site was renovated with great attention paid to:

low energy consumption, both thermal and electric
low carbon footprint
hemp blocks produced locally by Isohemp provide optimal thermal isolation
underfloor heating from local company Opal Systems optimize heat distribution
high performance double glazing reduces heat loss
ventilation management: Energy Recovery ventilation, heat recovery and fresh air distribution
generation of our own heat with Biomass and geothermal heating (underground heat exchanger)
intelligent building features to optimise utilisation of energy and heat

We protect and promote biodiversity on our farm:

our farm is a haven for a variety of fauna and flora and even houses a group of bats in danger of extinction
our living, natural hedges have been labelled as such for more than 20 years
our farm is entirely organic and hasn’t seen a pesticide or chemical product for more than 30 years
some of our apple trees - from which we produce our own apple juice - date back to the Napoleonic era

We have a global & comprehensive approach to reusing and recycling:

compost produced in the kitchen is redirected to the farm
our blankets and duvet inners are produced from the wool of our alpacas (who also mow the lawn)
during our renovation all beams, wood and historical stones were recuperated
old stones were pulverised to produce gravel, rather than trucking in more than 300 loads of purchased gravel

A restaurant of quality consumes enormous amounts of energy. To reduce this consumption we:

all water used for dishwashing is used heated by our Biomass plant instead of with electricity
our Energy Recovery Ventilation system recuperates the heat produced in the restaurant and re-injects it into the building
intelligent regulation of energy needs (production, distribution and utilisation)
utilisation of complementary batteries to stock surplus energy produced by our solar panel installation
all organic compost used by the farm
contract with company to recycle waste ecologically
